Some Bible maps are beautiful enough to capture on canvas and display on a wall. One such image is Mt Nebo’s view of Promised Land…the view Moses had of the Promised Land as he stood on Mount Nebo, shortly before he died.
This is what he would have seen on a clear day, looking west across the Jordan River Valley into what was then known as Canaan. Today, it’s Israel and Palestinian Territories.

Why Moses didn’t make it to the Promised Land
Moses didn’t make it across the Jordan River with the Joshua and the second generation of Israelite refugees on the Exodus out of slavery in Egypt.
Bible writers say God was punishing Moses for some sin that the writers didn’t fully explain. Centuries later, one songwriter briefly captured the story in four lines:
“The people provoked you at Meribah Spring.
Moses got in trouble that time.
The people made him so angry
That he spoke thoughtless words without a filter” (Psalm 106:32-33).
It’s unclear what Moses said or did that upset God. The oldest account of the story says God accused Moses of not trusting him. Moses was supposed to produce water in the desert for the thirsty people by tapping a rock with his walking stick. But he angrily hit it twice. After Moses hit it once and nothing happened, he hit it a second time, as if God needed an extra tap to get his attention. The story appears in Numbers 20:8-13.
Some scholars say Bible writers may have downplayed the details to avoid further damaging the reputation of Moses.
